Solving the murder of the woman in the Old Iron Bog should have been easy for veteran Detective Frank Nagler — except she didn’t have a head or hands, and the weeklong tropical storm that wrecked Ironton, N.J. hampered the investigation as promising leads vanished.
That crime opens to a series of events in the literary political mystery, “The Swamps of Jersey.” It is a big deep story. Wrapped inside the frame of a police procedural is a story of human strengths and weakness: Love, hate, crime, revenge, power, delusion, social change and redemption.
Ironton is a city on the edge. Bad economic times are made worse by a storm that destroys homes, businesses and the city in general. At the edge of the story is Lauren Fox, a woman sent to Ironton to jump-start economic development. She and Nagler are attracted to one another and seem to begin a serious relationship when she suddenly leaves town without an explanation.
The story is as much about Nagler’s internal debate and examining the setting of economic decline and how it is influenced by political corruption, as it is about the crime solving.
